Jurgen Klopp Jokes About The Reason Why He Made This £27million Transfer Decision

Christian Benteke might be having an on and off season at Crystal Palace this season but there never was any doubt about his ability. The 26-year-old Belgian striker joined Palace at the start of this season from Liverpool after failing to impress German manager Jurgen Klopp.

Benteke wasn’t a Klopp signing but the German did give him a season to show what he was capable of doing. The Belgian scored 9 Premier League goals all season for the Reds but has already scored eight for the Eagles this season.

While many suggested that the playing style of Klopp, gegenpressing, did not suit the tall and burly striker, it seems the German had already stated why the former Aston Villa striker was sold by the club.

Liverpool had defeated Norwich City in a thrilling 5-4 game which included a stoppage time winner from Adam Lallana. Cue frantic scenes with the Liverpool players all celebrating with Klopp. The German’s glasses were broken and he did have a laugh about it all in the post-match interview.

The topic came up when Klopp was asked to discuss the epic 5-4 win over Norwich last season.

Klopp now seems to have opened up about why Benteke was sold:

“It was a wonderful experience, that game at Norwich. It showed a lot about the boys and a lot about the spirit in the team we had after four months working together. That was a nice highlight,” he added.

“They were absolutely broken! In the picture, I have them in my hands,” Klopp said while in an interview with Liverpool Echo

“It was Christian Benteke who did it. So don’t kill my glasses or otherwise you will be sold!”

Benteke having trouble at Palace

Liverpool had sold the Belgium star to Palace for a sum of £27 million and while the striker has scored eight goals in 16 Premier League games, most of them have come from the penalty spot. The striker also missed a couple of penalties recently and a lot of pressure is already on the former Villa man.

Palace also have a new manager in charge with Sam Allardyce picking up from Alan Pardew, who was sacked. There might be some good news for Benteke as Allardyce is known for playing a more direct brand of football and that could mean more long-balls and crosses for Benteke to attack.

The 26-year-old might still perform well at the London club after a tough time at Liverpool. Blame cannot be put across at Klopp since Benteke was not the ideal striker for him and certainly would not fit into the Liverpool system or team at the moment.

One thing we can take of notice is that no player should mess with Klopp’s glasses. Benteke was the first one and hopefully the last player that steps on the boss’ glasses.
