Liverpool’s Makeshift Defender Could Be Signing With His Former Club

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva’s time at Anfield is certainly coming to an end and for once there might be a great story as the Brazilian looks to complete a move to his former club Gremio.

The 29-year-old has been used as a makeshift defender by Jurgen Klopp this season and with his contract coming to an end in the summer, Lucas will be free to leave the Merseyside club after 10 years at the club.

The former Gremio man was linked with a number of moves to Italy and Turkey but decided to stick with the squad as Klopp didn’t have enough cover for his defence. Mamadou Sakho was frozen out of the squad and that saw Lucas start in a number of games as a central defender, the latest one being the 2-0 win over Tottenham.

While the Brazilian did do extremely well against Spurs, he has not looked comfortable at the back and with a place in the midfield tough to get, moving away from the Reds does make sense.

Gremio might not be able to compete with some of the bigger European clubs as they look to add Lucas to the side but their president, Romildo Bolzan Junior, was speaking to UOL.

Bolzan Junior stated that the club have spoken to the representatives of Lucas but admitted that signing the Brazilian will be a tough task.

“Lucas Leiva is a player who is in the fans’ imagination. He is a player that would be important to bring, we made an approach, but at the moment he is out of the possibilities,” said Bolzan.

“I’m not going to feed false expectations. It’s very difficult for Lucas Leiva to come to Gremio, we made an approach and the conditions are very difficult.”

Lucas has only played for two clubs in his career and moving back to Gremio might be the perfect end to his chapter in football. The Brazilian does have a tough decision to make as he still has a couple of years of top flight football in him but it certainly is not at Liverpool.

Liverpool will have to bring in players in the summer and that will include midfielders and attackers as Klopp has been linked with a number of players but the Reds also have to look at their defence as they cannot afford to play players out of position.

James Milner and Lucas Leiva have been played as defenders this season and if the Reds have to repeat this next season, they will lose out on the top four for sure.
