Famous Liverpool Fan Talks About The Time He Antagonized Manchester United Fans At Old Trafford

We have all heard about the intensive rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United and sometimes fans also get a chance to antagonize their rivals on the big stage. DJ Spoony, who is a huge Liverpool fan, got the opportunity to do just that when he was playing a set during the interval of the 2015 Rugby League Grand Final at Old Trafford.

The former BBC Radio 1 DJ, whose real name is Jonathan Joseph, couldn’t miss out on the opportunity and decided to play the Liverpool anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” during the match between the Wigan Warriors and Leeds Rhinos.

While there were a few boos from the fans, DJ Spoony did say that he got a positive reaction as well from the fans of the Rhinos.

Speaking to LFC Later, the DJ stated:

“I don’t think [it went down well] with anyone supporting the Manchester clubs.

“But Leeds Rhinos were involved and their fans sung every word.

“They have an almost as bitter rivalry as we do as Liverpool fans, but look, I don’t know how many times as a DJ I was going to get to play music at Old Trafford so it was one I couldn’t really pass up!”

King Kenny was my first idol

The DJ also spoke about which players were his idols and how he fell in love with the club.

“I started supporting Liverpool when Kenny Dalglish was the first idol and then John Barnes,” he added.”

Joseph also had a chance to live out the dream of every Liverpool fan as he got to play with his idols in a tournament.

“I was playing in a six-a-side tournament and had Kenny Dalglish and John Barnes in my team. So that was a little bit awe-inspiring.

“For interviewing, I had a great time with Brendan Rodgers, I spent the day with him, and spent the day with Kenny Dalglish too when he was there, that was special.”

That’s not all; the DJ also is stated to be the inspiration for former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey’s disc spinning celebration, though the former England international didn’t have a lot of opportunities to perform that.

This isn’t the first time something like this has been done between the fans. There have been stories of builders laying Liverpool or Manchester United memorabilia when they have some construction work to do for the opposition.

While it does remain mild banter between the two groups of fans, not many would see the lighter side of it.
