Liverpool are currently scouting several options who would be eligible to replace Alberto Moreno as the primary left back in the Liverpool first-team. The Spaniard was the first choice left back for the club when the season began. However, a horror show in the 4-3 opening day win over Arsenal has relegated him to a bench role.
The club has been utilising midfielder James Milner as the emergency left back so far this season. Even amidst several high profile targets, the club are also looking at potential youngsters who can establish themselves in the team.
Honduras defender Wesly Decas appears to be one of the players benefiting from Liverpool’s need for a left back. The youngster featured prominently in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship with Honduras. He has reportedly been offered a trial at Liverpool.
Even though there is no guarantee of Decas making a move to Anfield on a permanent basis, it is a huge step in the right direction for the young player. At just 17 years of age, he was one of the top players in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship. This led to the player catching the attention of several Liverpool scouts.
Despite being one of the minnows in the CONCACAF region, Honduras managed to reach the final of the competition where the only lost to USA on penalties. At present, he plays for Atletico Independiente. Liverpool will need to make an offer for the player in order to sign him. It remains to be seen if Independiente are interested in selling player in the first place. There is also the small task of agreeing personal terms with the player.
Decas is not the only young left-back in the eyes of the club. Liverpool have been keen on bringing in Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon, who has been one of the stars of the Championship this season. Sessegnon has been quite impressive for Fulham despite his age.
At just 16 years of age, he is already being seen as the next Gareth Bale. His attacking qualities will certainly appeal to a club like Liverpool who place a lot of emphasis on the fullbacks to create chances. Liverpool already have an extremely attacking full-back in the form of Nathaniel Clyne, who has created two assists in 27 league matches this season.
Milner has performed efficiently in the left back position so far. However, there is a widespread consensus that the club’s poor defensive record is largely due to fielding makeshift players at the back. Liverpool have conceded the most number of goals among teams in the top six in the Premier League, while they are also the top scorers.
