Liverpool’s midfield could be bolstered next season with another German talent. The Reds have been linked with a number of Bundesliga stars and Max Meyer from Schalke is the latest player that the tabloids are talking up a move to the Reds.

The 21-year-old will be in the final year of his contract at the club next season and it seems that talks of an extension have been kept on hold. Meyer has made 22 Bundesliga appearances for the side and has just one goal to his name.

“There have been no further talks,” he said at the weekend. “Why not [leave]? I can imagine both [staying or moving on]. The odds are 50-50.”

The Mirror even claims that Tottenham are ready to battle Liverpool for the signing of the rising star and a fee of £17 million (via This Is Anfield, h/t Bild) could be enough to see the attacking midfielder land up to English shores.

While the Reds seem to be linked with every player from the Bundesliga, Meyer does have history when it comes to facing Jurgen Klopp. The player did partake in a derby against Borussia Dortmund and had lots to say about the current Liverpool manager.

Speaking last summer, the 21-year-old said:

“I know from the past that he appreciates me as a player.

“After my first derby against BVB—scoring a goal when I was 18—he has publicly expressed praise for me.

“This is a nice feeling when such a great coach says that.”

That should not get the hopes high of the fans though. A lot of players are being linked with Liverpool and Meyer could be an option should the Merseyside club not be able to sign Mahmoud Dahoud of Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Reds have also been linked with Meyer’s teammate Sead Kolasinac and the left-back would be a prudent signing, given that he too has had a great season this time for Schalke.

Klopp has to be smart about the signings he makes next season as the Reds look to build on a decent season that could have been better. Meyer certainly can add to the attack of the Reds and only time will say if he does join the Merseyside club.
