Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is all set to be inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame later this year. Gerrard’s immense contribution to English football seems to have earned him this honour, and surely, he will be pleased with this.
The former Liverpool superstar scored a total of 186 goals in 710 appearances for his boyhood club – a career which spanned 17 years from 1998 to 2015. He made 114 appearances for the England national team and has 21 goals to his name.
Gerrard, 36, joins former England team-mate and Chelsea icon Frank Lampard, Arsenal goalkeeping legend Bob Wilson and West Ham United’s record appearance holder Billy Bonds as the 2017 additions.
The other names who are set to be included in the Hall of Fame are Late Gary Speed, and England Women’s national team members Kelly Smith and Rachel Yankey.
To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, which comprises of some of the greatest players in English football history, including some members of the 1966 World Cup winning England team, the players must be in their retirement or be at least 30 years old if they are still in their playing career. They must also have served a minimum of 5 years in England, either as a player or as a manager.
The Hall of Fame celebrates the achievements of the top all-time English footballing talents as well as non-English players and managers who have been significant figures in the English game’s history.
This year’s new Hall of Famers will be inducted in a special awards ceremony sponsored by the Professional Footballers’ Association at the museum in Manchester on September 21.
Steven Gerrard will the 14th former Liverpool player to join the Hall of Fame, which already has Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish, Billy Liddell, Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan in it. Former Liverpool managers Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly are also in the Hall of Fame, along with the whole Liverpool team of 1978, who were honoured for their incredible achievement of winning their 2nd consecutive European cup by beating Club Brugge by a 1-0 margin.
Steven Gerrard is now a coach at the famed Liverpool Academy and if he continues to rise, he may very well be handed the job of managing the Liverpool U-18s.
