The expectations were high when we signed an 18-year old Joe Gomez back in 2015 and he was expected to make some quick progress, considering the quality talent that he is. However, it wasn’t possible to include him in the first-team too much and like any other youngster, he wasn’t afforded too many opportunities for the senior team.

Two seasons later, he has made 10 appearances for the Liverpool senior side and continues to work hard to breakthrough. The versatile defender is still highly rated by the coaching staff and the latest news is that Jurgen Klopp is waiting to watch him in the pre-season before making a decision on his future.

According to Liverpool Echo, Liverpool will give Joe Gomez the chance to make his mark in pre-season, despite a number of Premier League clubs showing interest in the defender.

Gomez, who was signed by Brendan Rodgers, did have little impact on the first-team but suffered an unfortunate Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury when playing for England U21s shortly after Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as manager, and was forced to miss nine months as he recovered.

An Achilles problem after recovering from the ACL injury set him further back and he made just 3 appearances last season (all in the FA Cup) after returning to fitness in November 2016.

The Kop Times Verdict

Klopp will be aware of the need for squad depth next season as we’d be competing on all four fronts. Gomez is a promising young talent and was challenging well for the first-team place until his injury set-back. So it would be right for Jurgen Klopp to think twice before sending a promising young talent away from the club.

It would be disastrous if he joins a new club and comes back to haunt us. So it is better that we respect his talent and give him the chance to prove himself before making a final decision on his future.
