This ought to be good news for the Kop faithful. German international Emre Can who was stalling on a new contract is expected to put pen to paper later this month.
Reports suggest that Can’s representatives who are in touch with the club hierarchy for more than a year now, are ready to accept the terms. He is not entirely a contract rebel but Can’s situation has sent jitters across the board as Jurgen Klopp looked to tie down his fellow countryman.
Amidst all the news about stalled negotiations, Italian Champions Juventus tried to take advantage and sign the player. There wasn’t anything official – neither from the player nor from Juve – but the rumour mills kept buzzing with the link.
Liverpool were prepared to reject any offer from Juventus as they felt Can was a vital player for Klopp. Not least because of his versatility that can see him slot in both defence and midfied. Juventus know this well as they monitor other options this summer.
Part of the interest is because Can’s contract has just one year left. That door should now be firmly shut as Liverpool expect the powerful German midfielder to sign a new deal.
Can was always categorical in stating that Liverpool helped him develop as a player. He always wanted to stay at the club, provided he gets first-team action, together with stability of position. Being shunted across the field was one of the prime grouses than the money being offered.
With the midfielder now closer than ever to an extension, the Liverpool faithful can heave a sigh of relief. There is a sense of excitement around the club after getting back in the European elite by qualifying for Champions League. Klopp is getting his aces ready to mount a challenge for titles next season and Can will surely be vital in that quest.
Where does that leave Can? To be honest, the player is still some distance away from establishing himself as a regular. If the club goes on and makes a move for the £70million-rated Naby Keita of RB Leipzig, he will have a bigger battle on his hands. The Reds fans aren’t complaining though!
