Former Liverpool Star Blasts Club’s Inability To Sign A Defender In The Summer

The recent defensive capitulations have brought the spotlight back on the manager and our rather rigid transfer policy. Liverpool have conceded 7 goals in their last two games and there have been many questions asked about why we did not sign a central defender, especially when it was clear that Southampton did not want to sell Virgil van Dijk to us.

This time, it is former star Jan Molby who has come out and asked some serious questions about why we didn’t bring in anyone, when we knew this was possibly the one area we had to strengthen in the summer.

When speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the legend said:

“The club went strong for Virgil van Dijk and was prepared to pay a world record fee for a defender.

“Yet when the window closed we had strengthened in every position apart from centre-half. Like most fans, I struggle to understand that.”

As expected, the former player added that we should have tried to sign someone else and that Van Dijk was not the only defender in the world.

“Was Van Dijk really the only defender who would have improved this team? I refuse to believe that was the case.”

The real kicker was Molby adding that Davinson Sanchez could have been a signing for us and that he could have really made our defence better. The Colombian joined Tottenham.

“Of course some weren’t for sale but part of scouting is finding players. I wonder about the boy Davinson Sanchez, who went to Spurs from Ajax.

“Why didn’t we show any interest in him? I still think we’re a more attractive proposition than Spurs. It makes you wonder sometimes.”

While Molby does make a lot of sense, this should be a learning curve for Jurgen Klopp. We are one of the best teams when it comes to attacking the opposition but our defence still has more holes in it than a block of Swiss cheese.

The team cannot get better in the defensive end until the next transfer window and only a miracle and a lot of hard work can ensure we don’t concede silly goals anymore.

Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren have had poor seasons so far but we have to go on and the next game against Burnley will be another test for us.
