With the January transfer window now in full swing, there have of course been a million names already linked with a move to Liverpool this month. After selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona earlier this month for a hefty sum of money, it is not surprising to see us get linked with a number of players over the last few weeks.
Speculation remains about goalkeeper Mignolet’s future and The Mirror recently suggested that the Reds were keeping tabs on Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak. Current Liverpool shot-stoppers Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius have both struggled for form, leading to Jurgen Klopp considering a move for a new goalkeeper at the end of the season.
Karius was drafted in to play in Liverpool’s 4-3 victory over Manchester City last weekend but most Reds fans would agree that the German has not yet fully convinced between the posts for the Merseyside club.
It has also been reported that the 25-year-old Oblak has a release clause of €100million (£88.35m). However, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has now poured cold water on reports that the Reds could make a move for the Slovenian international.
In a Q&A, he said that PSG were interested in signing the Atletico Madrid star but the player himself was focused on trying to sign a new deal with the La Liga outfit.
Balague said: “He is trying to renew his contract with Atletico. PSG have shown interest but I have heard nothing from Liverpool.”
On Friday, Klopp admitted that any more Liverpool business in the January transfer window would be unlikely.
The Reds boss explained: “If something jumps in my face then maybe we will think about it but we aren’t actively looking for a new player we don’t know so far.
“We have to use the players we have. That makes absolute sense because we have high quality players.”
It is true that we need a world-class goalkeeper in order to challenge for the Premier League title and compete in the Champions League. Oblak, without any doubt, falls into the elite shot-stopper’s category and the Slovenian would be a great signing for us.
Although it is hard to see Atletico losing one of their key players in the middle of the season, the Reds should prepare from now to make a move for him in the summer of 2018.
