Liverpool legend admits current 63-goal trio is better than the attack inspired by 82-goal beast

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard feels the current Reds attack is better than the Luis Suarez-inspired attack under then manager Brendan Rodgers.

Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah have formed a breathtaking and frightening attack for Liverpool this season. The eye-catching trio was on the scoresheet in the first-leg against Porto in the Champions League round of 16, taking their tally to 63 goals scored together this season.

While Mane grabbed his first ever hat-trick for the Reds, Salah and Firmino scored a goal apiece to help the Merseysiders thrash Porto 5-0 away on Wednesday.

In the 2013-14 season, Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge had formed a fearsome attacking triumvirate, betting 65 goals between them.

Suarez instantly became a fan-favourite during his short stint at Anfield, netting 82 times in 133 games for the Reds in an attack that ripped defences to shreds.

But the Merseysiders have a new look attacking line-up now in Mane, Firmino and Salah that is wreaking havoc domestically as well as in Europe.

Gerrard, who played along with that 2013-14 attacking trio, believes Jurgen Klopp has a more potent and well-balanced attacking line-up.

“What I would say about the comparisons between Suarez and this current team is that there is a better blend here (in the current team),” Gerrard said on BT Sport. (h/t Express)

“With Mane you have the pace and directness, with Firmino you have the touch and hold-up play and securing the ball, and then you have Salah that gives you a bit of both and delivers goals.

“The workrate of this Liverpool team is very, very special, and you also notice how unselfish they are. There’s no greed in the team, there’s nobody who is selfish. They all pass the ball to each other. If someone is in a better area, they look for each other. And they are all getting in on the act because they know they are going to score heavily.”

There is not even a shadow of doubt that our current attack is better than the one involving Suarez. The trio of Suarez-Sturridge-Sterling was good and struck fear into rival defences but our present attacking line-up which involves Mane, Salah and Firmino is deadly and can rip apart any given defence.

A big credit to Klopp for making this Liverpool side such a free-flowing and spectacular attacking unit.
