Liverpool have moved ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Napoli’s Jorginho, according to reports. The 26-year-old has starred this season at Naples and that has seen him garner a lot of attention from some of Europe’s top clubs, including Premier League giants Manchester United and Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen his midfield in the summer and is eyeing Jorginho as a replacement for veteran Michael Carrick, who is expected to retire at the end of the season.

However, Jurgen Klopp too remains keen to add firepower to his midfield and is focusing on the Napoli man. Emre Can, who has entered his final five months into the current contract, has left Liverpool confused. He is neither signing an extension with the club nor speaking to foreign teams for signing a pre-contract agreement ahead of new season.

Regardless of the contract saga, Klopp has remained confident that the club will tie Can down to a new contract. However, Klopp is not ready to take any chances and wants Jorginho to strengthen his midfield in the summer, according to the Daily Star.

The Reds, who will finally land Naby Keita from RB Leipzig in June, are concentrating on strengthening the midfield ahead of the new campaign.

On Jorginho’s future, a Ladbrokes spokesperson told (h/t the Daily Star):

“Coutinho’s exit will have hurt Liverpool fans in January. But it looks as though Klopp will replace him with another Brazilian-born superstar who’s taken Serie A by storm this year.”

Jorginho has been a key figure in Napoli’s rise to the top this season. He has been the driving force from the midfield and has contributed the team’s cause with a number of assists and goals.

The Brazilian-born Italian sits at the base of the Napoli midfield and dictates the tempo of the game with his exquisite range of passing and crossing abilities. Jorginho would be the perfect player alongside Keita, to dominate the show for the Reds from next season onwards. The 26-year-old would bring a different flavour to the game and make Liverpool’s devastating attack tick.
