Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has urged Liverpool to sign Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld in an effort to strengthen their defence and also weaken Spurs’.

Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in the world. The Belgium international has had injury problems this season and has been able to make only 10 appearances in the Premier League.

The Belgian’s contract expires at the end of next season and as per Football.London, Spurs have decided to end talks over an extension due to differences in wage demands. But the North Londoners can trigger a clause in the 29-year-old’s deal which would see him stay at the club for another year.

However, in doing so, Spurs will also activate a clause which would allow the centre-back to leave for just £25million during a two-week period at the end of the summer transfer window in 2019.

This has led to suggestions that Alderweireld will be allowed to leave in summer should Spurs receive a bid in the region of £43m. The report also claims that the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are all interested in the Belgian.

With some of Europe’s top clubs vying for Alderweireld’s signature in the summer, Wright feels that Liverpool should also enter the race to sign the Belgium international.

“I can’t wait to see Liverpool’s business in the summer,” Wright told Sky Sports’ The Debate (h/t Football.London). “I am so excited about that.

“They’ve got to get a goalkeeper. They need another centre-half. Get Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham so they can weaken them and Arsenal can do a little bit more against them!”

Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the January transfer window and securing the services of Alderweireld would make our defence rock solid next season. However, it would obviously be difficult to prise away a top player from our Premier League rivals.
