Stephen Warnock compares Karius’ early struggles with De Gea’s early days at Manchester United

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has compared Reds goalkeeper Loris Karius’ situation to Manchester United’s David de Gea after an “incredible” run of form.

Karius had a difficult start to life at Anfield following his arrival from Mainz in the summer of 2016. But having moved ahead of Simon Mignolet in the pecking order, the German has performed well between the sticks.

The 24-year-old has been consistent for the last couple of months or so, repaying Jurgen Klopp’s faith in him. Those assured displays in goal have been likened to the slow start made by De Gea at Old Trafford.

When discussing the developments made by Karius in recent months, ex-Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock told BBC Five Live (h/t Liverpool Echo

):

“The only thing I would say is years ago when I was at Villa we were playing Man Utd. David de Gea was in goal and having a bit of a tough time.

“I turned to Wayne Rooney and said ‘what is he like?’ and he said ‘he’s unbelievable. He’ll be the best in the world one day’.

“Of late, Karius’ form has been incredible – he made one of the saves of the season recently against (Newcastle’s) Mo Diame. That save is as big as a goal.

“And he’s showing that form and potential that Klopp sees in him.”

Karius did have a shaky start when he signed for Liverpool from Mainz in 2016. He was ruled out for two months after breaking his hand. After recovering, he failed to inspire confidence and played second-fiddle to Mignolet.

However, since becoming the club’s No.1 goalkeeper, the German has improved massively. His distribution and shot-stopping abilities have been good, while his decision-making has become better this year.

Karius continues to perform at a very high level. The German has made the No.1 spot his own and looks confident of keeping his place for a very long period of time.
