Ian Wright suggests Liverpool should sign a defender like Alderweireld to challenge Man City

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright believes Liverpool should look at signing someone like Toby Alderweireld in the summer.

Alderweireld’s future at the London club has looked uncertain, to say the least, as the club and defender haven’t finalised a contract extension and there have been multiple reports of the Belgian wanting out of Spurs.

Wright was speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Express

) and said:

“[Liverpool should sign] someone like Alderweireld. I don’t know if they’re looking at him. He is somebody who I’d be looking in and around.”

The former striker also added that signing Alderweireld could get us closer to Manchester City, who won the Premier League title this time around.

“They need to get that quality and confident player in there. They are not a million miles away. Man City will be scared of him.”

Alderweireld’s season has been marred by injuries but the 29-year-old is still considered as one of the best central defenders in the league.

The Belgian has played just 18 competitive games for Tottenham this season, with just 11 appearances coming in the Premier League.

Liverpool, for their part, did spend big in the winter window, signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton but could still do with more quality in their defence.

Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan all have had their ups and downs while playing under Jurgen Klopp and maybe bringing in Alderweireld would raise the competition for partnering Van Dijk at the back.

The Belgian’s partnership with Jan Vertonghen for Spurs was one of the plus points for the side last season and that is something they have greatly missed this time around due to Alderweireld’s injury record.

Signing him from Tottenham would not be easy as dealing with Daniel Levy is another ball game. However, if we can somehow convince the Spurs chairman to sell the defender, we would have two solid ball-playing centre-backs, something with which we can build on.

Alderweireld might not be the youngest defender in the world but his quality and experience would be great to have, especially if we look to match Manchester City next season.
