Jasper Cillessen of Barcelona wants to leave the La Liga giants and join Liverpool according to reports coming from Spain.
Diario Gol (h/t The Express) claims that the 29-year-old Dutch star is willing to swap Spain for England and is keen to team up with Jurgen Klopp ahead of next season. The report claims that the player has informed Barcelona of the same.
The 29-year-old hasn’t been playing regularly for the La Liga giants, having been the understudy to Marc-Andre ter Stegen for the last two years. In fact, the Dutch keeper only played 9 matches for Barcelona last season, with 7 of them coming in the Copa del Rey.
There could be one major problem ahead of this proposed move as Ernesto Valverde wants to keep Cillessen at the club should an injury happen to ter Stegen
The Dutchman was one of the most impressive players in the 2014 World Cup and it was a surprise that he moved to Barcelona knowing that he would not be guaranteed a starting place given that the club had ter Stegen and also Claudio Bravo back then.
Liverpool have their own problems with the goalkeeping department and that was further highlighted in the 3-1 Champions League loss at the hands of Real Madrid.
Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius have both had their issues between the sticks since making the move to Anfield and it should come as no surprise that we are being linked with a move for goalkeepers.
Alisson, the AS Roma keeper, has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield but his asking price of £79m seems to high.
Moving for Cillessen would make sense from a financial point of view as the 29-year-old would not cost as much as the AS Roma man. However, he would not be the option for the long run.
Liverpool do need a new No.1 keeper and hopefully, we will be able to sort out this issue sooner than later and prepare for the new season.
