Liverpool ready to smash record by paying £79m for world-class custodian

Jan Oblak

Liverpool have bid £79m to sign one of the most exciting goalkeepers in La Liga, Jan Oblak, from Atletico Madrid according to reports from Spain.

Don Balon (h/t The Express) claims that the Reds are ready to make Oblak the most expensive keeper in football history and the club is confident that Atletico will sell their star keeper in the coming months.

Oblak has been incredible for Atletico since taking over the gloves from Thibaut Courtois, who returned to Chelsea after a loan spell in Spain. The 25-year-old Slovenian also picked up the Europa League title last season and played in 37 matches in the league for the La Liga giants.

The report also suggests that Oblak would replace Loris Karius as the No.1 at Liverpool after the German’s errors in the 3-1 loss against Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

This is not the first time we are being linked with a big-money move for a goalkeeper as another target that has been linked

with us over the past year or so is Alisson from AS Roma.

We got a close look at the Brazilian keeper when we faced the Roman side in the Champions League semi-final and we pumped 7 goals past the 25-year-old.

However, Marca (h/t The Express) claims that Real are looking in bringing Alisson over to Spain and we might have lost that race.

Big money to bring in quality

Over the years we haven’t really spent big on bringing quality keepers but this report does suggest otherwise. Spending £79m on a keeper is crazy but we have to pay big money to bring in the best players to the club.

We were lucky when we got Mohamed Salah for £36.9m but had to haggle a lot to sign Virgil van Dijk, making him one of the most expensive players ever.

The same might take place as we look to upgrade our goalkeeping department and hopefully, it will work out for us sooner than later.
