Former Liverpool player Steve Nicol does not want the Reds to sell Divock Origi. The Express claims the Belgian has been linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund but Nicol claims Jurgen Klopp requires squad depth this season.

The pundit was speaking on ESPN FC (h/t Express) and further claimed he would have sold Origi had Danny Ings stayed at Liverpool.

“Liverpool have just pretty much got rid of Danny Ings.

“That means that their depth is going to be tested.

“If they want to be fighting on all fronts, then they need a squad.

“They now have a squad and that includes Origi.”

Ings joined Southampton on a season-long loan, with the Saints set to sign the Englishman permanently at the end of the season.

“So, the fact that Danny Ings has gone, I would say no. Had Danny Ings stayed, I would have said yes. But guess what, this is a miss.”

Origi scored six goals for Wolfsburg last season from 36 games. The Belgian doesn’t have a great scoring record for the Reds, with 21 goals from 77 appearances in all competitions.

The 23-year-old’s playing time at Anfield would be limited due to the presence of Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and Dominic Solanke.

Nicol might claim that we have to keep Origi for squad strength but a lack of regular football will only stagnate the Belgian’s growth.
