Liverpool end controversial sponsorship deal with water company

The Liverpool Echo reports that our controversial sponsorship deal with Tibet Water Resources has come to an end.

The company had become our official water partner in China last season and the report claims that nearly 90,000 people had signed a petition asking the club to end the partnership.

The report further adds that Liverpool did not terminate the deal but the contract was signed only for a year and there was no chance of a renewal.

Tibet campaign groups had claimed that the company exploits the natural resources of the region. The report adds that the group carried a billboard to highlight the suffering of Tibetans under Chinese rule when we faced Manchester City in January.

The campaign and advocacy manager at Free Tibet, John Jones, was quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying:

“We are thrilled to learn that Liverpool FC and Tibet Water have parted ways. A company that exploits the resources of an occupied and oppressed people is not a viable partner.”

Gloria Montgomery from the Tibet Society further said:

“This is a massive victory for Tibetans and the nearly 90,000 people globally who called on Liverpool FC to ditch the deal.”

Liverpool have had a number of sponsorship deals with brands since FSG took over. Nevertheless, we have to be a little careful when selecting our partners, as the club are one of the biggest in the world.
