“He should have booked him” – Liverpool star believes Watford midfielder tried to get a penalty in our 3-0 win

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has claimed that Will Hughes should have been booked for a possible dive during our 3-0 win over Watford.

The game was 0-0 at that point and Watford were battling hard to put us under pressure. Hughes went down after a challenge from the Scot but the referee didn’t blow as Robertson played on.

The left-back told the Liverpool Echo (h/t Mirror):

“I’ve watched it back and I still don’t think I made contact with him, I think he was looking for it.

“He went down quite easily and I don’t know why the referee didn’t book him having not given the penalty.”

The defender added that players have received penalties in similar circumstances but maintained he didn’t rough up Hughes.

Robertson also spoke about his presence of mind, before adding that the Watford man should have been penalized.

“A lot of players try to buy penalties and sometimes defenders can’t do a lot about it. But I played on and tried to get the ball straight away because in my eyes it wasn’t a penalty.

“My conscience was clear. The only thing I would say is that he probably should have booked him.”

Liverpool needed to grind out the win at Vicarage Road but our quality came through in the final half an hour.

Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino got the goals for the Reds. We kept yet another clean sheet and the result ensured we made our best defensive start to a Premier League campaign.

Robertson was excellent in the game as he helped set up the third, and hopefully, he will put in a similar performance when we play Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
