Latest Liverpool news: Jamie Carragher pinpoints what is missing in the current Liverpool team

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher wants the Reds to sign an attacking midfielder even if they win the Premier League.

The Sky Sports pundit was speaking after the 0-0 draw against Everton, which pushed us down to second place behind Manchester City.

Carragher was asked if the Reds have a problem and the Englishman stated that there has been an issue with the midfield from last season (h/t Mirror):

“There were certain games, like the final of the Champions League, where you looked at the set-up and thought that they lacked just one player.”

The Englishman added that the team needs to find a replacement for Philippe Coutinho, and even highlighted one name that we could not sign:

“They lost Coutinho last January and they never replaced him.

“They tried to replace him with someone from Lyon (Nabil Fekir) but they couldn’t get him.

“Even if Liverpool win the league I still think it is a position that Liverpool need to try and fill.”

Lack of midfield creativity

The midfield for the Reds is solid but lacks creativity. Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and Jordan Henderson will never score a ton of goals.

Naby Keita has failed to find his form at Anfield, though he hasn’t started too many games. Xherdan Shaqiri looked good early on in the campaign, but his form has also taken a nosedive.

The Reds didn’t sign a replacement for Coutinho as the Brazilian left for Barcelona, and the lack of an attacker in the middle of the park has hurt us in some of the close games.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has also been a huge miss for the Reds this season, but the Englishman should play for us soon.

Hopefully, we stay in the race for the title and overhaul City, but that will be tough unless we find our attacking verve.
