Liverpool’s young goalkeeper Shamal George was subjected to an allegedly racially motivated attack in the city centre, reports the Independent.

The report adds that Merseyside Police are investigating the incident which took place at 1 AM on Saturday.

Liverpool supporting George

A Liverpool spokesman added that the club was shocked at the attack, with them providing support for the youngster (h/t Independent):

“Liverpool Football Club is shocked and appalled that Shamal and a family member have been subjected to such a terrible ordeal.

“As a club, we will offer Shamal and his family any support that they require.”

The spokesman added that the club will forward any enquiries to the Merseyside Police and appealed for more information.

George hasn’t played much football for the Reds, but spent last season on loan at Carlisle United and was even at Tranmere Rovers recently.

It is a little shocking to learn about the incident, and hopefully, the culprits are found soon.

The Reds have a couple of quality keepers in Alisson and Simon Mignolet. It will be interesting to see how we deal with the younger keepers in the team, with Caoimhin Kelleher also highly rated at Anfield.
