Jurgen Klopp was in fighting mood regarding the importance of the Champions League for Liverpool.
The Reds have done extremely well under the German and reached the final last season. This season hasn’t been that great given we needed to wait till the final group game to ensure our qualification for the knockout rounds.
However, the German was not happy with suggestions that elimination from the tournament would help us in our Premier League quest.
Gary Neville, and other pundits, had made such claims but Klopp rebuked them (h/t Guardian):
“That’s the reason why they don’t have a job on the sideline – one of the reasons.”
The manager added that the Reds have to constantly qualify for the Champions League as it provides revenue for the club to improve.
The German had a veiled dig at some of the other clubs with rich owners claiming that we cannot ask people for money and have to earn all of it ourselves.
Klopp was not happy with the suggestion of getting knocked out of the Champions League and spoke about the criticism he received earlier for losing in the domestic cup competitions (h/t Guardian):
“It is so easy to sit in an office or a studio and talk about things like that.
“You draw a season and say the best way to go through it is to go out of all the cup competitions early.
“You do that and in that moment the same people go for you like mad.”
Liverpool exited the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in the early stages this season, however, we sit just one point behind Manchester City in the Premier League.
There will be more twists and turns in the coming weeks with eight games to go, and many fans backed Klopp’s comments on the pundits.
