Latest Liverpool news: James Milner saves Reds with crucial penalty conversion against Fulham
Liverpool’s James Milner went from zero to hero in a matter of minutes as he scored a late penalty to defeat Fulham. The Englishman came on in the second half while the Reds were leading by a Sadio Mane goal.
His first bit of action was to slice a clearance which put Virgil van Dijk in all sorts of trouble. The Dutch defender tried to head it to Alisson but the pair made a meal of it and former Red Ryan Babel slotted into an empty net.
Babel didn’t celebrate the goal but this felt like the end of our title challenge. Fortunately, Mane won us a late penalty after Sergio Rico hauled him down and Milner slotted the ball into the net.
Keeping it cool when it matters
Liverpool had dominated the game and should have scored more than once. Mohamed Salah had another off-game but got into great positions.
Mane also hit the post with a deft header and our lack of another goal almost cost us in the end. Fortunately, Mane and Milner came to our rescue and sent us to the top of the table.
The Reds hold a two-point lead over Manchester City going into the international break, but our rivals have a game in hand.
Milner had a great moment and a poor one too, and many fans reacted to the Englishman’s minutes at Craven Cottage.

He did owe the team. The spinning high back pass wasn’t great. Everyone’s been there though.
