Forget Henderson: Liverpool should name this 27-year old as captain next season

Liverpool opinion: Virgil van Dijk should just be named as the captain

It was in October that Liverpool decided to have a vote on who the captain would be. The Guardian reports that Jordan Henderson and James Milner out of the Champions League tie against Red Star Belgrade, and the Reds had to act.

Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum were named as third and fourth captains respectively, and Jurgen Klopp was happy at the selection by the players (h/t Guardian):

“Virgil is still young, he looks more of a man than he really is. There is nothing wrong with that and he can still improve. If you see and hear him you think there is big distance between him and you because he looks impressive.”

The German added that he sees Wijnaldum wear the armband too, but Van Dijk has already done that a few times this season, and Liverpool should make the change next season.

Already Netherlands captain

The 27-year-old is already the captain of the Netherlands and has been in excellent form for club and country.

The Dutch defender has helped Liverpool to a great defensive record this season, and has found the back of the net several times.

Jordan Henderson is the captain of the team, and this isn’t to say that he is a poor leader in any way, however, Van Dijk seems to ooze a little bit extra and you can see that when he is on the pitch.

The Dutch defender barely puts a foot wrong when he is playing and seems to make everyone else better around him.

It isn’t a coincidence that the Reds have the best defensive record this season, and the defender has been ever present in the team.

Jordan Henderson and James Milner are not sure shot starters for Liverpool any more. Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum and Naby Keita provide a lot of competition for the midfield spots.

Adam Lallana’s return to form in recent games and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will also make it tough for the Milner-Henderson pair to constantly start games.

Van Dijk has played 31 Premier League games this season while Hendo has only started 15 games with 10 appearances as the substitute.

Van Dijk is indispensable to the team, and will possibly start more games for the Reds than any other outfield player when fit.

The defender is in the form of his life, has years ahead of him and is captain material. Klopp should just go ahead and make the change next season as Van Dijk is doing his bit for the Reds this season.
