Former Liverpool academy player Alexander Kacaniklic has spoken about Roy Hodgson selling the wrong “Alex” during his time at the club.
The youngster, along with Lauri Dalla Valle, were highly rated in the Liverpool system years ago but were part of the deal that saw Paul Konchesky arrive from Hodgson’s previous club, Fulham.
Although the Konchesky experiment didn’t go well, Kacaniklic spilled the beans on the fact that he wasn’t supposed to join the Cottagers.
Speaking on the Lundh podcast (h/t Metro), the former academy star said:
“When I was in Fulham and before I signed up, I had a conversation with Roy Hodgson on the phone, where we found out that he had changed the wrong Alex.
“In his head, he thought he changed another Alex for Konchesky. But then it was too late. It’s a little funny.”
The forward added that Hodgson did give him the option to return to the club without any hassles, but Kacaniklic had made up his mind of joining the Cottagers.
The former Red now plays for Hammarby IF in Sweden and only has good memories of his time at the club.
“Already in the academy, how professional it was. It was a fantastic football upbringing with all the coaches and then training with all the players at Melwood – it was a dream.”
Hodgson didn’t have a great time as Liverpool manager and was replaced by Sir Kenny Dalglish, and we finished the season in sixth place.
The former Liverpool manager has done well with clubs in the past and is now managing Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
The Eagles face Manchester City later in the season, and hopefully, Hodgson can help our title chances by getting something from their home game.
