Liverpool FC transfer news: Mario Melchiot wants Liverpool to sign Matthijs de Ligt
Former Chelsea and Netherlands defender Mario Melchiot has urged Liverpool to sign Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt.
The Ajax youngster has been excellent for the club this season and has led them to the Champions League semi-finals.
The 19-year-old is also a regular for the Dutch national side and partners Virgil van Dijk.
Melchiot highlighted this partnership while speaking on talkSport, and believed the pair would be excellent at Liverpool too (h/t Mirror):
“The way he’s playing right now, I think if Liverpool were smart they’ll go after him.
“De Ligt and Van Dijk, those two together would be a great partnership.”
Van Dijk has been the best defender in the Premier League this season and he won the PFA Player of the Year award recently.
The pairing would make our defence even tougher to crack, which is hard to believe given we have conceded just 20 goals from 36 Premier League games this season.
Loads of defensive talent at Anfield
Although De Ligt would be an incredible signing for the Reds, we have loads of quality centre-backs and defenders in the team.
Joe Gomez was playing his best football at the start of the season before he fractured his leg. Joel Matip has done an excellent job alongside Van Dijk in the second half of the campaign while Dejan Lovren has done well more often than not.

The Reds also have youngsters Ki-Jana Hoever and Nathaniel Phillips coming through the ranks, and they should get more playing time in the coming years.
