Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would return to the Liverpool squad for the clash against Newcastle on Saturday.
The English midfielder played his first senior game of the season in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield. The 25-year-old was brought on in the second half and almost scored in the game.
The Reds lost Naby Keita for the remainder of the season after an injury in the 3-0 defeat to Barcelona, and Klopp was asked if the Guinean’s injury gave the Ox a chance to play more.
The German spoke about the Englishman travelling with the team but would not confirm a starting spot for the Ox (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“Yeah, of course. It is perfect that he is back but the intensity of the game, we will see.
“It is very good that Ox is there and for sure he will be in the squad but we have to make a decision who starts.
“We will use him, of course. There is nothing good to say about Naby’s injury but Ox being back is brilliant, yes.”
Liverpool are still in the race for the Premier League title and have to win against Newcastle on Saturday.
We then face Barcelona at Anfield in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final and need to overturn a 3-0 deficit.
The Ox was in great form when he suffered the knee injury against AS Roma last season, and it will be interesting to see how many minutes he gets before this campaign ends.
The Englishman’s dynamism from midfield could be a huge bonus for us as the season winds down.
