“He can open defences up” – Former Liverpool star wants Reds to raid PL rivals for English star

Liverpool FC transfer news: Steve Nicol wants Reds to sign James Maddison

Former Liverpool star Steve Nicol wants the Reds to move for Leicester’s James Maddison.

The English midfielder joined the Foxes in the summer from Norwich City after a great Championship season with the Canaries.

James Maddison

The 22-year-old has excelled this season for his new side with seven goals and seven assists in the Premier League.

Nicol highlighted Liverpool’s midfield trio of hard workers under Jurgen Klopp but wanted something different for the Reds, while speaking to ESPN (h/t Express):

“Klopp’s recent three in the middle of the park for Liverpool, over the last couple of years particularly, has been about gaining possession back, about closing the opposition back, about working really hard and then getting the ball to the front three.

“I would love to see a little change in that with somebody like Maddison, who no question has already shown in the Premier League, from the middle of the park, he can open defences up, he can create chances.”

The Express adds that the English midfielder has been linked with a move in the summer, and it will be interesting to see if the 22-year-old makes a move.

Klopp’s midfield trio do a lot of work for the team

Although the Reds don’t have an out-and-out creative midfielder, the trio in the middle of the park has put in a fantastic shift every single game.

The Reds spent huge last summer to sign Naby Keita and Fabinho, and have seen the return of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in recent weeks.

Maddison has the potential to develop even further and Nicol was confident that the Englishman would be a great signing for the Reds.

“I would love to see this. It would be a little change in the way that Klopp operated. But I think this would be a great signing.”

The 22-year-old would play at the tip of the midfield, giving us an additional attacking dimension, and could improve an already impressive Liverpool side.
