Latest Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk named EA Sports Player of the Season

Virgil van Dijk was named the EA Sports Player of the Season for 2018/19 by the Premier League.

The Dutch defender has been rock solid for Liverpool

in the Premier League and has helped them mount an incredible title challenge.

The 27-year-old has also scored four goals in the campaign and has helped us to 20 clean sheets in 38 games. Van Dijk has played in all 38 games for the Reds and has helped us to 30 wins.

Van Dijk claimed it was an honour to win the award and thanked the support from all quarters (h/t Premier League

“Without everyone here at Liverpool, fans and players, it wouldn’t be possible so I will definitely give them credit for all of it as well.”

Van Dijk follows Kompany’s footsteps

The release further added that Van Dijk is the first defender to win the Player of the Season award since Vincent Kompany did in 2011/12.

Van Dijk is the second successive Liverpool player to win the award after Mohamed Salah bagged it last season.

The defender faced a lot of competition for the award with Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard, Sadio Mane and Bernardo Silva all nominated.
