Liverpool centre-back and Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk has responded to the England fans booing him during the Nations League clash recently.
The Dutch came out victors as they reached the final of the inaugural tournament, but could not get the better of Portugal.
The Mirror adds that the Dutch defender was jeered by fans every time he touched the ball, but the Liverpool star wasn’t fazed by the reception.
Van Dijk was quoted by the Mirror as saying:
“I don’t care. If somebody boos me or boos the team, it’s because we are trying to win the game.
“We know we have a lot of support behind us anyway. At the end of the day it’s us players who have to do the job. It doesn’t affect me at all.”
The Dutch captain was upset at the loss and claimed that he wanted to win the international trophy (h/t Mirror).
Van Dijk claimed that there was more to come from the Dutch side and wanted the team to qualify for Euro 2020.
The Liverpool star capped off the club season by helping the Reds win the Champions League final.
Van Dijk was excellent all season as he won several trophies, and it is a credit that he dealt with all that was thrown at him.
The Dutchman is possibly the best defender in the world right now, and there should be more to come from him at Liverpool in the coming seasons.
