Liverpool FC transfer news: Reds target Alex McCarthy as back-up for Alisson
The Mirror reports that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is considering a move for Southampton’s Alex McCarthy.
The 29-year-old started the campaign as the first-choice goalkeeper at St. Mary’s but was replaced by Angus Gunn under Ralph Hassenhuttl.
The report claims that Klopp is looking at the England star as a back-up for Alisson. Simon Mignolet is expected to leave Anfield in the summer, and the report adds that McCarthy was on Liverpool’s radar last season too.
The 29-year-old started 25 Premier League games for the Saints last season and is one of the better keepers in the division.
A quality back-up for Alisson
There are no complaints regarding Mignolet’s tenure as the No.2 behind Alisson. The Belgian didn’t make a fuss about the lack of playing time, and it makes sense for him to seek other opportunities for more starts.
McCarthy would be a quality No.2 in the team and his Premier League experience will bode well for us.
Alisson was excellent in his debut campaign as he won the Golden Glove, but we need a reliable star as his back-up too. We could promote a youngster to do the role next season, however, an experienced campaigner like McCarthy would be ideal.

Klopp has been great with his transfers at Liverpool, and another raid for a Southampton star might work out just like how Sadio Mane’s did.
