Latest Liverpool transfer news: Alex McCarthy interested in Liverpool but Reds won’t move for keeper
Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is open to interest from Liverpool over a summer deal, according to the Evening Standard.
The Saints goalkeeper fell behind Angus Gunn after the arrival of Ralph Hasenhuttl last season, but the 29-year-old was the first-choice keeper at the start of the campaign.
The English keeper is also attracting attention from several other clubs after losing his No.1 status at St. Mary’s, according to the report.
Liverpool not interested McCarthy
The Englishman would be a decent No.2 to Alisson at Anfield, however, the Liverpool Echo claims that the Reds are not interested in the Saints keeper.
The report adds that Liverpool could be in the market for a second-choice goalkeeper should Simon Mignolet leave in the summer. The Belgian has been excellent for us as a team member and barely made any noises about leaving.
McCarthy has a lot of Premier League experience, and Liverpool have a tough decision to make regarding Mignolet’s future.
Any No.2 at Liverpool will play only a few games in the campaign, possibly only in the domestic cup competitions, but we need a quality back-up should Alisson pick up an injury.
Liverpool could promote one of the younger keepers as cover for Alisson should Mignolet leave, however, that could be risky given the lack of first-team experience.

The Reds have additional games next season due to the Club World Cup impacting our schedule, and we need to strengthen some other positions of the team too.
