BBC Pundit Garth Crooks praises Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott while mocking Chelsea
Garth Crooks bashes the discriminatory line of thought from Chelsea which made them turn down Liverpool attacking midfielder Harvey Elliott. Elliott has played a pivotal part in Liverpool’s season that helped them win the Carabao Cup and compete with consistency.
The sudden and surprise dip in form since mid-March cost the Reds dearly in an otherwise inspirational season despite adversities. The poor officiating, match scheduling and an injury crisis played a big factor this season but the Reds continued winning.
However, complacency undid their chances in the FA Cup, the Europa League and the Premier League in a disappointing fashion. Nevertheless, the Reds working under a restricted budget compared to their rival showed incredible promise as they faced staff transition.
Legendary manager Jurgen Klopp is leaving the club at the end of the season with Feyenoord manager Arne Slot arriving. However, academy players like Elliott who developed under Klopp will continue to build on his legacy at Anfield.
Writing in his BBC column for the Garth Crooks’ Team of the Week, Crooks praised Elliott’s consistency and mocked Chelsea. He said:
“Elliott has had an excellent season and proved he has a future at Anfield. Not bad for a kid who was turned down at Chelsea because he was too small. I’m amazed football clubs in England still think in those terms.”
Chelsea rejected Elliott in the same fashion when many clubs rejected the idea of Manchester City legend David Silva succeeding in the Premier League. The old notion of attacking midfielders being too lightweight to achieve success was always ridiculous and irrational to begin with.
Elliott is a Liverpool fan himself and the Reds are grateful to have him as part of the squad. Apart from his contribution in goals and assists, the young Englishman is one of the most hardworking team players.

Elliott capped his performance against Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend with an incredible goal and a fantastic assist. The attacking midfielder has a fantastic future ahead of him and he already has a lot of senior team experience.
