The Liverpool Echo reports that Nathaniel Clyne is unsure about his future after returning to pre-season training.
The 28-year-old left the Reds to join Bournemouth on loan in the second half of the previous season.
Clyne barely played for us, thanks to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez taking up the right-back positions, and made just four appearances.
The former Southampton defender fared better under Eddie Howe, and started 13 Premier League games. The report claims that Clyne is out of a contract at the end of next season, and there is little scope of a new deal being presented to the right-back.
Clyne has been linked with a move away and has also attracted some clubs, with the report adding that Bournemouth, West Ham and Crystal Palace are interested.
The Englishman is a quality defender who knows his role well, however, he isn’t great in the attacking third.
That is a problem in the current Liverpool setup, with a lot of emphasis being placed on the attacking output of our full-backs.
Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold were two of our best players last season, and the pair racked up several assists in the campaign.
Selling Clyne now would hand us a decent amount given that he is still 28 and could do well for a non-top six side.
However, the Reds are a little thin on natural right-backs in the current side, and we had to field Jordan Henderson in the position last season in a few games.
James Milner and Fabinho can also play that role, and it will be interesting to see if Clyne remains with us after the end of the transfer window.
