Ex-Man City manager backs Liverpool to win the league – names two important players for the Reds

Latest Liverpool news: Pearce backs Liverpool to win Premier League ahead of Manchester City

Former England star Stuart Pearce is backing Liverpool to win the Premier League next season ahead of Manchester City.

Pearce was in charge of the Citizens from 2005 to 2007, and was asked by talkSport (h/t Express

) if Liverpool, without any senior signings, were good enough to beat City:

“I think so.

“I predicted Liverpool would win the league last summer, and to get 90-odd points like

they did and still not win it, you’ve got to give Manchester City massive credit for that. But I’m tipping Liverpool this year.”

The Reds have only signed Sepp van den Berg so far in the transfer window, while Manchester City have signed a defensive midfielder and a left-back.

Liverpool only missed out on the Premier League title by one point last season and had a single defeat in the league campaign.

However, Pearce believed a couple of players could be important for the Reds as they returned from injury:

“It was near enough exemplary, bar one defeat to Man City in the league.

“They’ve got Joe Gomez to come back and there are such high expectations on him, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to come back as well to join what they’ve got.”

The former City manager added that we have lost Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno, but did not believe that would affect our team a lot.

Ox could be the big player for us next season

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain returned from a serious knee injury last season and got a few games towards the end of the campaign.

A complete pre-season should help him get back to his best, and we could use his driving runs from the midfield.

The Reds have a quality team all-around, and the Ox could be a huge bonus for the upcoming season.
