Former Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina was interested in rejoining his club as Simon Mignolet sealed a move to Club Brugge.
The Belgian was the back-up to Alisson last season but Liverpool agreed on a surprise deal that saw Mignolet return to Belgium.
The Reds moved quickly to snap up free agent Adrian on Monday. The Spanish keeper was released by West Ham in the summer and is a great
cover for Alisson.James Pearce was speaking during a Q+A session regarding Liverpool’s transfer business and claimed that the Reds decided against signing Reina (h/t Express):
“In terms of the keeper situation, I know Pepe Reina was very keen to come back to LFC but the club decided to go for Adrian instead.
“Alex McCarthy was also on the shortlist drawn up.”
Reina enjoyed several great seasons under Rafa Benitez but was replaced by Mignolet under Brendan Rodgers.
Reina’s departure from the club didn’t go all that smoothly and he spent time on loan at Napoli.
The Spaniard spent nine seasons at the club and was one of the best during his time, but moving for him again would have made little sense footballing wise.
Reina has been away from England for a while and Adrian looked great at West Ham in recent years.
The former Hammer is possibly one of the best back-ups you can find in England, while Reina has spent the last four years in Italy.
Adrian is also younger than Reina, and signing him seems to be the right move by the club.
