No Major Signings, No Problem For Liverpool

Last season saw Liverpool edged out in one of the Premier League’s most dramatic title races and although there was bitter disappointment at being pipped to the post by Manchester City, it was a blow that was undoubtedly softened just a couple of weeks later.

That’s because the and after their 2-0 win over fellow English outfit Tottenham in Madrid, it highlighted just how talented a group of players manager Jurgen Klopp has at his disposal.

While such are the options available to Klopp, it meant that there were no new major signings this summer and although some will point to that as a negative, there is also no reason to doubt the logic of the former Borussia Dortmund manager.

After once again becoming the dominant force in European football, it then asks the question as to just how you can keep improving what you already have and although there was no need for a revolution on Merseyside, some would have at least expected a form of evolution.

It’s an evolution that many will deem necessary for Liverpool to win the title and if you were to , you can understand why Manchester City have been placed as favourites to be crowned champions for the third time in succession.

Then again, perhaps the evolution has come in the way of getting rid of the excess and this is why both Alberto Moreno and Daniel Sturridge were not handed new contracts and subsequently shown the Anfield exit door in the off-season.

In addition to that, there is also the concern that too many or even any new arrivals could disrupt the balance of a team and this is one of the major reasons why it was deemed unnecessary to open the purse strings this summer.

At this point, critics will look at this as a missed opportunity to challenge Manchester City once again but perhaps you only have to look at the team that Liverpool beat in the Champions League final, as an example of how cohesion can be of a huge benefit.

No-one gave Mauricio Pochettino any hope of success twelve months ago after and although they may not have lifted a trophy, they achieved far more than anyone would have expected.

With that in mind, we may even be witnessing something of a change in mindset and perhaps there will be an even greater value in coaching over the next few years, which in turn slows down the rate and level of expenditure in the Premier League.

If the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool can achieve great things, without having to buy new players then it may make the rest of the Premier League sit up and take notice. Then again, maybe it shows just how good a pair of managers Mauricio Pochettino and Jurgen Klopp really are, as they extract every last drop from their players.
