“There were a few sloppy moments”: Liverpool star concedes that the Reds have to improve after Super Cup win

Latest Liverpool news: Gomez unhappy with Reds’ defensive performance this season

Liverpool were made to work hard in the UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea.

The Reds came out victorious, thanks to Adrian who saved Tammy Abraham’s spot-kick, however, Jurgen Klopp’s men were cut open several times by the Blues.

Adrian was made to work hard despite the Reds boasting of the best defensive record in the Premier League last season.

Joe Gomez

This has been the story of the season so far, with the Telegraph reporting that Liverpool have faced 40 attempts on goal in the first three games.

The Reds only faced 19 shots on target in the first three games of last season, and Joe Gomez wants this aspect of the team to improve (h/t Telegraph):

“There were a few sloppy moments and we obviously conceded two goals which could have been prevented. As a collective, we did not play the best football in the first half and I don’t think we got it down properly.

“There were phases we know we could have done better but at the end we all dug deep and tried to get the result.”

The Reds were a little fortunate as Christian Pulisic had an effort ruled out for offside. The American and N’Golo Kante were the chief architects for the Blues and Klopp

has to work on our defence.

Liverpool need to finalise their back-four

The- issues with the defence could be teething problems as the season has just begun, but Klopp’s decision to mix the back-four isn’t helping.

The loss of Alisson could not be predicted and Adrian has to improve some parts of his game, like the distribution of the ball.

Klopp rested Trent Alexander-Arnold and played Gomez as a right-back against the Blues. Joel Matip was rested in the win over Norwich but started alongside Virgil van Dijk in the Super Cup final.
