Jurgen Klopp claimed Liverpool could be without Adrian for the clash against Southampton on Saturday. The Spaniard was the hero in the UEFA Super Cup as he saved Tammy Abraham’s penalty in the shoot-out.
However, Adrian was hurt in the celebrations as a fan ran towards the players and slid into the group.
Klopp was asked about the Spaniard helping the side build on after the cup success but the German gave a worrying update (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“It would help a lot if it was 100% clear that he could play tomorrow because I really don’t understand it in the world of social media when we are all on it together, a supporter jumped over something, was chased by some security guys, slipped, and kicked his (Adrian’s) ankle.
“Crazy. Yesterday it was swollen, today I spoke to him, he’s here and he told me it’s much better than yesterday but we have to see.”
Should Adrian miss out, Andy Lonergan could feature for the Reds after having signed a one-year deal with the Reds recently. The 35-year-old has never played in the Premier League but has 401 senior appearances to his name.
Klopp also confirmed that Caoimhin Kelleher has rejoined training, and it will be interesting to see what happens with the keepers on Saturday.
Losing Alisson for a few weeks was bad enough but this situation was avoidable, to say the least. Facing Southampton isn’t easy, and we struggled to beat them in the previous campaign at St. Mary’s.
Lonergan hasn’t been tested at this level and the Saints will exploit this should the 35-year-old start. Many Liverpool fans were concerned about the situation with our keepers, and here are some of their reactions on Twitter.
