Liverpool backed to sign James Maddison in the winter window

James Maddison has been excellent for Leicester since joining from Norwich last season.

The 22-year-old scored a brilliant goal in the 2-1 win over Tottenham, and the Daily Star (h/t Liverpool Echo) claims that Maddison could join either Liverpool or Manchester City next season.

The Englishman has also been called up by Gareth Southgate in recent weeks and should be in the national team for the next international break.

However, Noel Whelan claims that Liverpool could sign the 22-year-old in January. The former player was speaking to Football Insider and believed Maddison was a perfect player for the Reds (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“James Maddison is absolutely a Liverpool type of player, I can see him joining.

“He can be the new Coutinho. He’s similar to him in many ways – great feet, can run with the ball, can see a pass that no-one else can and scores wonder goals.”

Liverpool could spend big in the window

The former player added that Liverpool have spent big previously to sign Virgil van Dijk, and could do the same for Maddison (h/t Daily Star):

“Can Liverpool sign him in January? Of course. They got [Virgil] Van Dijk in a January window and haven’t looked back.”

The Reds didn’t spend major money this summer and it will be interesting to see if we dip into the market in January.

Jurgen Klopp isn’t someone who changes things up in the winter window, but Maddison could be a great signing for us. The 22-year-old has tons of potential and would be an ideal player just behind the front three.

Leicester won’t allow their star to leave on the cheap, as we saw with Harry Maguire in the summer, but Maddison seems to be the next big thing in the Premier League.
