Georginio Wijnaldum might not score goals consistently but he is one of the most hard–working midfielders in the game.
The former Newcastle star helped us reach the final of the Champions League, thanks to his brace against Barcelona, and has performed well since last season.
James Pearce was asked if the Dutchman is set to sign a new deal with Liverpool after starring for us this season too:
The Athletic journalist claimed that he had spoken with Wijnaldum, and although there is no rush to hand him a new one, the Reds want to keep him for longer than 2021:
“I asked Gini last week if any talks were happening and he was very tight-lipped! He’s under contract until summer of 2021 like Matip so no massive rush with it but there’s no doubt that LFC want to keep him beyond that.”
The journalist also provided an update on Joel Matip’s situation and claimed that the former Schalke man isn’t leaving soon:
“LFC triggered a clause in his original contract to extend his deal by a further 12 months. So no great rush over a new deal. He’s here until summer of 2021 for sure.”
The Reds have time on their hands to deal with the two players, but both deserve new contracts.
Matip has been excellent with Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the defence while Wijnaldum has been doing his bit well for the team.
The Cameroon defender was behind Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez in the pecking order last season.
However, Gomez cannot get into the team now due to the Matip’s performances.
