The season is only seven games old but some narratives have already been set.
Liverpool and Manchester City will battle for the Premier League crown, Leicester and West Ham could break into the top six and Manchester United will struggle to break into the top four.
This seems to be another exciting season ahead for Liverpool as we have won all our Premier League games this season.
City have had some mixed results this time around, and are already five points behind us. However, we all know they have the ability to claw back any deficit.
Pep Guardiola’s side did that in the previous season as we dropped a few points during the second half of the campaign.
Liverpool’s fixtures are far from easy in the next five clashes, and these could play a huge role into where the Premier League title heads.
It is safe to say that Liverpool aren’t playing fluid football, something that they did a couple of years ago.
Jurgen Klopp seems to have made us a more pragmatic team and there are fewer mistakes at the back. However, controlling a game has its own pitfalls too as teams try to hit us on the counter.
We had to fight hard for our 1-0 win over Sheffield United, and Andy Robertson highlighted that winning games is more important than how we do it (h/t LiverpoolFC.com):
“Look, you can’t win 4-0, 5-0 every single week by playing beautiful football and everyone claps you off the park because they’ve been given a show.
“That’s a different show out there – we had to get down, we had to get dirty and we had to match their battles.”
Liverpool have been involved in some scraps and have found ways to beat teams without having to play crazy attacking football.
However, things get tough in the next five league games as we play Leicester, Manchester United, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Manchester City.
We have two Champions League games against Genk and a Carabao Cup clash against Arsenal sandwiched between the five Premier League clashes.
Leicester are currently third in the league and are playing great football under Brendan Rodgers.
Tottenham always bring their best when they face us and nothing can be taken for granted against Villa.
Manchester United will try to make it as hard as possible for us at Old Trafford while the game against Manchester City could be one of the games of the season.
In comparison, City face Wolves, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Southampton and Liverpool in their next five Premier League games.
Of course, Wolves and Palace took points off City last season, but on paper, they have the easier run–in.
If we come out unscathed against these ties, we would certainly have the advantage over Manchester City.
Winning all five games could be a bit of a stretch, but we have the capability of staying unbeaten for a long time.
We need to maintain a lead over City to keep them under pressure, and it will be interesting to see the table after these five Premier League games.
Should we have a three-point lead or more after the Manchester City game, we could land the one trophy all Liverpool fans hope for.
