(Not Firmino) Why this 28-year-old underrated Liverpool star is one of the world’s best given the current form

Joel Matip is possibly one of the best centre-backs in the world on current form

Jurgen Klopp gave a surprising response by claiming that Joel Matip is one of Liverpool’s best pieces of business under him.

The Reds have signed Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson during the German’s time at the club, and all of them commanded huge fees.

Matip was a surprise signing by Klopp, and a coup too, as the former Schalke man joined on a free transfer.

The Cameroon defender had a decent first campaign but came into his own when he replaced Joe Gomez at the back last season. The 28-year-old has been incredible alongside Virgil van Dijk and has removed Dejan Lovren from the first-team conversation.

The former Schalke man was not in the starting XI against RB Salzburg and our defence was a mess. Of course, Gomez made a few errors but the youngster needs time to find his feet.

The Englishman suffered a serious fracture last season and needs minutes on the pitch. Matip might not be the flashiest defender in the Premier League but he is making a claim of being one of the best.

Another underrated star

Roberto Firmino was one star who was underrated at the club before he started linking up well with Salah and Mane.

The Brazilian is the brain of the attack at the club and is one of the most important players in the setup. Matip is also another who gets the job done without making too much noise at the back.

The Cameroon star is also a great dribbler of the ball and often takes on the opposition defence, thus creating space for our attackers.

The 28-year-old has improved leaps and bounds over the past 12 months, and his partnership with Van Dijk is possibly the best in the Premier League.

Joel Matip scores against Manchester City

Liverpool haven’t been lucky with their free signings over the years but Matip ranks right up there as one of the best who joined for nothing.

The centre-back seems to be the perfect partner for Van Dijk at the moment, and he ensures greater stability at the back.

More Liverpool News

Frankly, Matip wasn’t expected to be the one starring with Van Dijk at the back, but the Cameroon star is playing his best football at the moment and is one of the best in his position.
