How Jurgen Klopp ensured that Liverpool averted a Tottenham-like disaster after Kiev – opinion

How Klopp ensured Liverpool did not fall back after losing UCL to Real Madrid

Liverpool became six-time Champions League winners in June as we beat Tottenham in Madrid.

That was the perfect end to a tough season where we missed out on the Premier League title by one point. Liverpool were brilliant throughout the campaign, but it could have been a different story had it not been for Jurgen Klopp.

The German had already lost two European finals as the manager of the Reds, and the loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League was painful. Liverpool had swatted teams away with their incredible attack but losing Mohamed Salah after 30 minutes was a bitter blow.

Jurgen Klopp lifts the Champions League trophy

Sergio Ramos did a bit of his thuggery to knock Loris Karius once, and Klopp didn’t want our Champions League story to end like that (h/t Mirror):

“Last year we really felt we had to go back.

“After what happened against Madrid (in the 2018 final), we felt we can not let it stand like this, that is not possible.”

It would have been easy to put our tools down and take things slow, but Klopp kept on working with the team and improved our defence.

Last season we reached the Champions League final with a great attack and defence, and we deservedly beat Tottenham in the final.

Liverpool push on as Tottenham fade away

Spurs have had a terrible season so far, and should have pushed on after their Champions League final defeat. However, the players just don’t seem to be in the right frame of mind, something that Klopp averted after the loss in Kiev.

Tottenham look completely broken, some of their players are in the final year of their deals, and their play has been in disarray.

Liverpool improved their play and pushed Manchester City all the way for the Premier League title. The German has turned us into one of the best teams in the world, and we keep on getting the job done.

Even with Tottenham spending loads in the summer, they haven’t been able to push on from their heartbreak in the Champions League. Liverpool didn’t sign any first-team outfield players in the summer, but seem stronger than ever as everyone seems to be on the same page.

Cup final defeats are never easy to take but Klopp has ensured we never put our heads down. Liverpool might have missed out on the Premier League last season, but we are stronger than ever this time around.

The German kept the team motivated when we weren’t winning trophies, and now we seem more than capable of landing every trophy we play in.
