The summer transfer window is already open and the rumour mill is in full swing, with the various Premier League clubs weighing up their options in the trading period prior to the start of the upcoming campaign. 

The PL teams made a lot of headlines last summer with some big-money marquee signings, with the moves involving the likes of Alisson, Fabinho and Naby Keita to Liverpool, Kepa Arrizabalaga to Chelsea, Alireza Jahanbakhsh to Brighton, Riyad Mahrez to Man City and Lucas Torreira to Arsenal creating a lot of excitement amongst the fans, and certainly a lot of hype in the media.

However, things have been relatively quiet in the transfer window this summer, given that none of the teams, barring newly-promoted Aston Villa, has completed any statement signing just yet. Villa have demonstrated their ambitions with the club-record acquisition of Wesley Moraes, while Man United and Bournemouth have snapped up some promising youngsters like Daniel James and Lloyd Kelly from the Championship.  

Well, it is only the end of June and one would expect the teams to show a lot more desperation as the transfer deadline draws nearer. Considering the riches on offer to the clubs in the Premier League, the excitement over the arrival of some top-quality players often overshadows the heartbreak of departure of other stars who have simply outstayed their welcome or have outgrown their humble surroundings.

1. Vincent Janssen (Spurs)

Signed from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar for a fee of £18.6 million back in the summer of 2016, Vincent Janssen arrived at North London with a huge goalscoring reputation. He was already a full-fledged international for The Netherlands at that time his stocks were soaring sky high after finishing as the top-scorer in the Eredivisie with 27 goals in the 2015-16 campaign.

However, the Dutchman struggled to live up to the expectations in the Premier League in his debut season at Spurs, scoring only twice in 27 league appearances. Janssen fell out of favour in the following season and made only a single substitute appearance in the first half of the 2017-18 campaign before being shipped out on loan to Turkish outfit Fenerbahce.

Janssen started the 2018-19 season on the treatment table but he hardly featured in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans after regaining his fitness, with the 25-year-old making just 3 substitute appearances in the league for the Lilywhites. His time at Spurs might not have yielded sweet returns but Janssen continues to be a talented striker, and at 25, he desperately needs to seek a move away from Spurs in order to reinvigorate his faltering career.

2. Danny Drinkwater (Chelsea)

The central midfielder’s £35 million move to Chelsea back in the summer of 2017 looked very odd even at that time and plenty of eyebrows were raised about the kind of eye-watering transfer fee involved in the deal. The Englishman was one of the architects of Leicester City’s Premier League title-winning campaign in the 2015-16 season but it never looked like he had the quality to be a regular name in the first-team at Stamford Bridge.

The 3-cap England international made 22 appearances in all competitions in his debut season at Chelsea under Antonio Conte but the arrival of Maurizio Sarri saw him axed altogether from the squad. After featuring in only one matchday squad in the Premier League for the entirety of the 2018-19 season, it is surely high time for the 29-year-old to start looking for greener pastures in a bid to get his career back on track.

3. Wilfred Zaha (Crystal Palace)

With 10 goals and 5 assists in 34 Premier League games for Crystal Palace this past season, the 26-year-old certainly deserves another opportunity to test his credentials on a bigger platform. Zaha’s time at Man United wasn’t particularly good, given his lack of first-team opportunities at Old Trafford, but with the prolific attacker making his desire to compete in the Champions League very clear, Palace are going to have a tough time keeping him at the club.

The Eagles, though, have slapped a massive £80 million price tag on Zaha and it is clear that any potential suitor would need to stump up a huge amount of cash to lure the Ivorian away from Selhurst Park this summer.

4. Shkodran Mustafi (Arsenal)

The German 2014 World Cup winner came under criticism for some high-profile and costly defensive errors in the Premier League last season, with his lapses in concentration prompting the fans and the pundits to slam him repeatedly for his lacklustre performances.

Mustafi retained his status as a regular at the back under Unai Emery due to lack of personnel in the club’s ranks but he is likely to find himself down the pecking order if the Gunners choose to bring in defensive reinforcements this summer.

Arsenal can hardly expect to recoup the £35 million that they paid to Valencia for his services back in 2016 but it won’t be a bad idea for the Gunners to cash in on him this summer in order to reduce their wage bills.

5. Adam Lallana (Liverpool)

The Englishman established himself as one of Jurgen Klopp’s trusted lieutenants in the midfield following his £25 million move from Southampton back in the summer of 2015. Lallana was a regular for the Reds during his earlier days at the club and proved himself to be a perfect fit for Klopp’s high-intensity pressing football before a series of injuries coupled with some high-profile arrivals pushed him down the pecking order.

Lallana found himself on the periphery of Liverpool’s first-team last season, and although he showed glimpses of his brilliance when called upon, the 31-year-old should look to force through a move to another club in order to rejuvenate his career, with his contract at Anfield set to expire in 2020.
