Gary Neville claims Manchester United’s goal against Liverpool should have been overturned

VAR was the talking point from Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

Adam Lallana might have scored the equaliser but there was a lot of controversy regarding Marcus Rashford’s opener.

Divock Origi seemed to be fouled in the build-up to the goal, with Martin Atkinson asking for VAR to check if there was a problem.

Replays showed that Victor Lindelof has hit Origi on his calf as the Belgian went down but after a long wait, the goal stood.

This incensed Jurgen Klopp on the pitch and he had a go at VAR after the final whistle. Jordan Henderson wasn’t happy with the officiating either, and there was support from former Manchester United defender Gary Neville.

The former England right-back and Jamie Carragher were commentating on the game and believed the goal should not have stood. Neville believed Lindelof had fouled Origi (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“I think that’s going to get overturned, you see he turns and there is a kick on Origi’s calf and he goes down. That one, Manchester United are devastating on the break.

“Is it going to stand? They’ve been reluctant, the fourth officials, referees and VAR to overturn referee’s decisions but that looked like a foul.”

The United legend is right in saying that the officials aren’t willing to overturn the referee’s decision, and Carragher even blamed Atkinson for a failure to notice the foul:

“You talk about VAR, I didn’t think it would be over turned. From seeing that this season, Martin Atkinson is in a great decision, it’s actually poor refereeing.”

Neville then confirmed what he saw and highlighted that there was contact between the players.

“I really thought he was going to overturn it. It’s one from behind where you see the toe-poke go into his calf. This is the angle, just watch, he kicks his shin.”

Liverpool fight for the point

Liverpool dominated possession in the second half but didn’t do enough to get three points.

It was a slow start from us and United’s game plan of sitting back and attacking on the counter worked. However, the goal should never have stood and it is incredible how VAR isn’t solving issues but causing more talking points.
