Liverpool had to dig deep to win against Aston Villa in the Premier League. Trezeguet opened the scoring for the home side in the 21st minute as Liverpool were caught out by a free-kick.
The Reds then tried to get back in the game but had to wait until the 87th minute for Andy Robertson to equalise.
Sadio Mane got the winner deep into injury time as we kept our six-point lead over Manchester City. However, there was a major talking point when Roberto Firmino’s effort in the first half was ruled offside.
The Premier League confirmed that Firmino’s armpit was offside, however, Jurgen Klopp was not happy and claimed VAR could lead to manager sackings (h/t Metro):
“When we talk about serious moments, very important moments in football, it’s not right to sit here and everyone wants to laugh about it.
“It is not to laugh about. It is too serious. Managers get sacked for losing football games.”
VAR also checked Villa’s goal and that could have been ruled offside too. However, Klopp also highlighted an incident when the ball struck Matt Targett’s arm, but no penalty was given.
Klopp is right in suggesting that the decisions made via VAR need a better explanation, and some of the calls have been perplexing too.
The Reds still went on to win the game and will now prepare for the visit of Manchester City next Sunday.
This was the third game in the last seven days where we have fallen behind, but we have come back to win two of those clashes.
