Klopp responds to questions about Liverpool playing two games in two days in December

Jurgen Klopp wants a solution to fixture congestion after Liverpool play two games in two days

Jurgen Klopp did not want to cancel competitions but wanted a feasible solution to fixture congestion problems.

Liverpool travel to Qatar for the Club World Cup but also have to play in the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Aston Villa.

There were several options mooted but the final decision sees Liverpool play the two games in two days.

The BBC

reports that the Carabao Cup clash will take place on 17th December and our Club World Cup semi-final takes place the next day.

Liverpool already have a packed schedule due to their Champions League games, and that will only increase if we make it to the knockout stage. The FA Cup will add games to the schedule later and Klopp wanted to find a solution (h/t BBC):

“I don’t want to cancel competitions, I am from Germany – why would I want to cancel English competitions? It should still be possible and that is what I did but some people do not like it, I cannot change that.

“We cannot carry on like this, come on. We have to sit down on the table and at one point we have to find solutions. The solution so far are more problems.”

The manager even joked that he would ask Villa to come to Qatar for the Carabao Cup clash.

Klopp unhappy with fixtures in general

The German also spoke about FA Cup replays, which he “did not like” and didn’t understand why the Carabao Cup semi-finals are two-legged affairs.

Klopp added that he didn’t want to get into trouble with FIFA or the EFL and admitted the Reds would do their best with the options at hand. This will be a real test of our squad depth as playing two games in two days is far from ideal.
