Liverpool up against Real Madrid for German striker Timo Werner
According to ESPN (h/t Express), Liverpool are set to battle Real Madrid for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner in the summer transfer window.
The German striker has had a blinder of a season, chipping in with 24 goals and 10 assists in 27 appearances for the Bundesliga leaders.
The 23-year old is contracted to stay with the club until 2023. The report goes on to state that Werner has a clause in his contract that will let him leave on the cheap after he has played four seasons for Leipzig. This is currently his fourth season with the club.
The Reds will face the biggest challenge from Real Madrid, who need a long-term replacement for the ageing Karim Benzema. Luka Jovic’s poor form since joining Real could further prompt Zinedine Zidane to make a move for the German.

It has recently been suggested that Liverpool remain the player’s favoured destination. With the Reds looking on course for a first league title in 30 years, Liverpool’s hand will only be strengthened going into the summer.
The player would provide a world-class option for Klopp to rotate into his front three. He would be a welcome addition, considering Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will miss a month of football owing to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021.
Whether a deal for the striker can be agreed in the summer or not remains to be seen.
